Billed as the Grateful Dead’s 15th anniversary show, this gem from Boulder starts out with a twenty minute bang – Uncle John’s Band>Playing In The Band>Uncle John’s Band. This unusual opener grabs your attention and the band doesn’t let up for the next few hours, hurling through great renditions of Tennessee Jed, Samson & Delilah and the set-closing Deal.
The setlist for the short second set is not great, probably because the band played what would normally be the second set’s centerpiece to start the show. However, we’re still treated to a good Feel Like A Stranger and a really good Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World. Unfortunately, this is followed by Drums/Space and then Saint of Circumstance sans Lost Sailor and the energy never really gets back to where it was pre-drums. No matter. To complete the strange order of things, the band plays a double encore, with the frequent first set opener Alabama Getaway leading things off and Brokedown Palace to bring us home.
As the Grateful Dead Listening Guide points out, this is a great audience recording. You can listen to it or download it here: https://archive.org/details/gd1980-06-08.SonyECM250.walker-scotton.miller.88452.sbeok.flac16
